Steve, I don't mean to suggest that a musician can remain a good player if s/he never touches the instrument between live performances. But I have a hard time imagining Glen Gould playing Hanon or Czerny for six hours a day in order to keep his fingers strong for Bach and Beethoven. Setting up a straw man is the last thing I want to do. If your position is not that a player, to remain a player, must do tedious, repetitive scales for some big chunk of the day, must "perspire," I apologize for misrepresenting you.
