WRONG…(RIGHT)…WRONG, again! You are assuming that you are the only one using an Amiga (but, apparently not on a professional level) that has a graphics background. I've been in the game for some 25-years now, own my own advertising design studio, numerous local, regional and national Addy, Printing Industries of America awards, etc. You are correct in stating lpi (lines per inch) when it comes to the original halftone screen RULES (e.g., "I need a 133 lpi H/T") but, the resultant is dpi (Dots-per-inch)… and IT IS MORE PREVALENT now that the flatbed plotters (used for output from color sep houses) OUTPUT IN SQUARE, ROUND or OVAL DOTS-PER-INCH, and are NOT using the old-fashioned steel-rule LINE screen! AS FOR 32-bit Color QuickDraw, I dare you to take a look at an image (24-bit, 16-million colors) whether as a (Sharp JX-450) scanned color photo or as a color illustration in a PAINT program, then transfer THE SAME IMAGE to a DESKTOP PUBLISHING program, such as Pagemaker or, better yet, QuarkExpress. You will only see the image as 256 COLORS!!! At least that was the case last week when I was using a new MacIIx system with "Visionary" software (modified QuarkExpress} at a local Scitex color separation house and importing Scitex scanned lo-res files! As you're probably aware, the 32-bit QuickDraw routines only use 24-bit for color, with the other 8-bit for "transparent" colors and other data. As yet (to my knowledge) current STP software has not taken advantage of 24-bit to display images as 16-million colors within the DTP program itself. Also, as you're probably aware, both Scitex's "Visionary" system and Crossfield's "Lightspreed" are aligning themselves for bitstream (outline) type fonts (although they are installing PostScript RIP's, too for "us current state-of-the art'ers"), and Mac new System Software V7.0 is directing itself to outline fonts (BTW: they've divested their stock in Adobe; and Adobe has now licensed PostScript to VariType and Compugraphic…if that tells you something about the future of PostScript) By the way, I DO use the Amiga PROFESSIONALLY with Professional Page and Professional Draw. It has some advantages over Pagemaker and QuarkExpress (well, 1 or 2 maybe <grin>), but is severly handicapped with access to Linotron-type output (without transferring EPS files to MS-DOS or MAC-DOS disks) (I use A-Max and it's a pain), and fonts (not control, but screen bit-mapped to match PostScript .metrics and the inability to download Adobe fonts to a LaserWriter for proofing). BTW, ProPage is coming out in their next release (August) with Compugraphic OUTLINE fonts <hope that helps us Amigans> I first got my Amiga(s) about 2-1/2 years ago when COLOR on a Mac was just coming out and Amiga already had it <mistake). Currently, I am looking <have been> at a complete IIx system, but waiting for the local color sep houses (one is Scitex, the other Crossfield) to get the "bugs" worked out on each of their repective software programs to see which direction I will take. —Regards (and glad to see someone else here "talk graphics" other than video and ray tracing)
