As for Mac's new 32-bit QuickDraw enabling 24-bit (16-million) colors to be
displayed in a "high-end DTP," you'd better take another look and count
your bit planes! Over the past few weeks, I've been consulting with two
local color separation houses regarding their new Mac systems: one is a
Crossfield using Lightspeed; and the other a Scitex with Visionary/Gateway
(modigied QuarkExpress). Both can show 24-bit color in a PAINT" program,
but when the same image is imported into a DTP program as a lo-re file, it
is ONLY DISPLAYED in 256 COLORS! It is partially a function of the DTP
software and the fact that a hi-res image takes up 15-18 megabytes of
memory to be able to display them…far too much for Mac's current RAM
capabilities. HOWEVER, you can still manipulate the lo-re images for
cropping (they don't like to rotate them), masking, etc. THE VERY SAME
THING can be done using the handy -dandy Amiga using ProPage or ProDraw
while seeing a 16 gray scale image with the 24-bit RGB (5-6 megabytes in
size) being output in PostScript.
