Yes, you are partially correct. The FCC requires that BROADCAST video
(i.e. television) be limited to 330 lines. This is so that signals on adjacent
channels do not bleed.
The equipment used in the generation of television programming,
however, is much higher, usually 800-1000 lines and it is NTSC! Remember these
are vertical lines not horizontal lines which are limited to 525. The pictures
on professional quality studio monitors with direct feeds from studio cameras
are incredible. The NTSC system is capable of much more than is currenlty
available. The problem is the broadcasting of the signal itself not the video
standard. I am an avid video collector and only use laserdiscs. Even the
difference between broadcast (330 lines) and laserdisc (425 lines) is very
noticable.
