I, too, have used DOG occasionally. It's now in version 2.0x and seems
pretty reliable. I had a bad experience with version 1.0x: I had a bad
sector on my hard disk; DOG bombed out on that sector and left several
files cross-linked. Fortunately, I had backups.
From what I gather, DOG is probably as good as commercial programs, and
it has the advantage of being generic MS-DOS.
Of course, you could back up your hard disk, then reformat and restore.
That would work the same as a de-fragmentation program, but it would be a
lot slower, especially backing up onto floppies.
