Tom, 2.0 makes 1.3 look like trash. In the "look at it with your eyes"
sense of the phrase. next, it supplies many facilities that are missing, or
only available thru PD offering (of dubious quality) from unsupported
sources. if we say that the change from 1.1 to 1.2 was important to the
stability of the OS, that 1.2 to 1.3 was important to the power of the
shell and file system
, then it would be fair to say that the change from
1.3 to 2.0 is important to the _seriousness_ of the system – how
effectively it can be marketed, used, and – this is important – how
smoothly a developer can implement professional applications.
2.0 is very important, IMHO. When it is released, we will no longer
developer software that concerns itself with running under 1.3 or earlier –
right now, we won't develop anything _for_ 2.0, simply because there is no
assurance that it will be released at any particular time. When (if) it is
released, we'll jump right on board.
