Of course it is more visually appealing to keep the same window open and re-draw the gadgets and text. It is very easy to remove gadgets from windows by tinkering with the window gadget list. One thing you might consider is that it is usually quite annoying to the user to have a sequential set of screens come up. If at all possible it is better to have all of the options available from a central branching location. That way the user can get to that one parameter he wants to tweak in two steps instead of 8 or 9. To solve that problem consider a main menu with a few boolean gadgets that go to other complete windows, it may be more user friendly.
