Best thing to do for smoke from an explosion, is watch a few Loony Tunes on
TV. It is a simple effect, mostly parts of a circle (arc, arc), either
expanding, or moving away from the center with pieces of the explodee.
A building would create a lingering smoke that dissipates, where an
exploding bomb would create concentric rings of smoke that grow large and
exit off screen, and a gerble would create little or no smoke.
Try running a Loony Tune explosion in slo-mo on the vcr to get an idea of
movement. Use a large round brush for the smoke/clouds and optics to
shrink/expand them….and wha la! a boomer! 🙂
