The route for video is two-fold. Video goes from Targa+ to the
straight to the video deck. Quality is enhanced by addition of a "house"
sync generator – you should do this for broadcast work. This assumes you
want to use the Targa+ built-in encoder (whether SVHS or NTSC). For
external encoding (for those who can afford Grass Valley & Faroudja), you
pull the Analog RGB signal from the board, through the encoder (or
transcoder for SVHS) and the encoders signal goes to the deck. The key now
is WHEN to record the frame that's displayed on your Targa – the Diaquest
controls the VTR (using a serial connection for broadcast units), pre-rolls
the VTR as needed, rolls up to the frame # you want to record on, then
triggers the VTR to record the current incoming video signal. Tape then
rolls on, no longer recording (post-roll), then is told to pre-roll for
another swing. If Targa images are already saved to disk in sequence, time
to load an image from disk, display on the Targa+ and record to VTR should
be between 10-20 seconds per frame (obviously original rendering time is
incredibly more time-consuming).
