Allan, if you get speckled or mottled results from a brush, check to see that the brush does not lie directly at the object's edge, but rather floats just a bit off it; moving the brush .01 units away from the surface is OK. As far as selecting all the faces making up the front of your logo, simply drag the mouse in the TOP view. This will pick up the front faces without anything else. For more complicated situations, I believe you could use Hide Points to temporarily disable parts of your object that get picked up against your will. Once you've isolated the area you want and have performed the desired operation, you can return to Pick Objects or Pick Groups and click to make the whole object visible again. Blaq! – via Whap!
