Don The .info file contains only three pieces of information … a magic number, the date/time stamp of when it was last updated and the names of the proper file.info files in the directory. When you open a window, WorkBench reads the .info file and gets the names of the file.info files from it (rather than reading all the #?.info file names from the directory) … in addition, WorkBench will often re-write this file when a window is closed. WB can live without the .info files, but will create them if it opens a window and doesn't find one. The .info files are responsible for 75% of all disk trashes amongst new users since a new user might well simply close a window and then, knowing he didn't write anything to disk for a long time, will reset or turn-off the Amiga. Meanwhile, some seconds later, WorkBench had decided it was going to re-write the info file and was in the middle of a write at the time! The .info files are there to speed up the icon display (as it doesn't need to read the directory contents) but, in my opinion, they cause more problems than they are worth. The window size information is held within the directory.info or the disk.info files. Mike (Whapping from the UK)
