The .info file is not really necessary. It contains a list of the files in
a directory in hash number order, and I think it is intended to make it
faster to get a directory. To the best of my knowledge, it was never fully
implemented. I do hope I'm wrong and that someone will tell us both
exactly how it is used. I spent a LOT of time trying to find out several
years ago.
