HAM is a special Amiga mode. H stands for hold, A stands for and, M stands
for modify. This mode enables the Amiga to display 4096 colors (12 bits) in
just 6 bits of data. It works off of sixteen base colors and when a new
color (not one of the sixteen) is needed it uses the top two bits to
designate to hold a color and change one of the color guns (red,green,blue)
to another value. This is a vastly simplified explanation, it get's better
when someone goes into display hardware like the Ham-E (>262,000 + colors
).
