I will have to take a better look at the software/hardware combinations
that are currently, or soon to be, available. Both products you mentioned
seem to have untapped cababilities. Approximately 4 years ago, I designed
a pilot PC system for the hospital where I work. It allowed any doctor's
office with a FAX to call a PC with a voice mail card and request patient
test results by Medical Record Number. The PC would then connect to the
mainframe and verify the MR#. If the number was good, it would connect to
the Lab computer, download the test results for the patient, and then FAX
them to the doctor's office. The pilot worked fairly well, considering
that the software was running as TSRs under DOS (we would get one or two
hangs per day). I wanted to try it with a multi-tasking OS or one that
supported multiple DOS partitions such as VM386, but the driving force left
due to "differences in management philosophies" and the project went on the
shelf. It was later decided that we did not have the staff to develop and
support PC software.
BTW, I should mention that the Project Manager of our LAB system presented
the idea at a user conference and now the vendors of the LAB system are
offering a similar product. Do you think that our management wants to buy
the product? One hint, these are the same people that were in charge four
years ago.
