With a hard disk, the question isn't so much "if" if will fail, but rather
"when". Also, don't forget than an errant program or controller board
failure can do a nice job of trashing a HD, even if there is not a problem
with the drive itself.
One tactic that uses less disks is to only backup your data files and rely
on the originals to restore the programs, but, this becomes difficult to
manage as well, since you likely spent a lot of time on creating your disk
structure. I've used tape, floppies, and a networked second hard disk
(analogous for this purpose to using something like a Syquest) for backups
at various times on various systems. Of all of them, I prefer tape.
Now, if only an affordable tape unit would show up, I'd be all set. 8)
