John, There is also the issue of software that modifies the stored copy. Programs such as Whap! that modify the on-disk copy of the program after it becomes registered. Or programs that modify configuration files rather than rewriting a whole new configuration file. For example, the old shareware version of Procomm on MS-DOS machines used to keep a counter in it's parameter file and would update it every time you ran the program.
