John,
I might suggest that for experimenting and learning Homespun Digital
Optical Effects and Rotoscoping you look into getting a V-Lab. I've been
having great fun and learning much with V-lab. I've gotten an Imagine
virtual aircraft to fly through video clouds, and have experimented with
synchronizing the movements of Imagine's virtual camera with the movements
of a hand held video shot for a very realistic composite.
I will eventually move up to a PAR type system. But I find the $400 price
of V-lab an easily justified tuition that allows me to experiment and
develop new techniques with worrying about a large investment. Now, once I
feel I have mastered "Digital Optical Effects 101" and am ready to move on
then, I'll invest the $2500-$3000 needed for you lucky PAR owners.
