James, The 14,000 hr figure seems high. Thats about 4 to 5 times the occupational experience needed here in PA. for vocational technical instruction. I just added an additional state certification to my instructor certificate and had to prove 2500 hrs of on the job skilled work experience. We have a great shortage of hands-on skilled instructors in the US today and many unemployed military industry workers are rushing in to fill the jobs, BUT they may have great tech skill experience but could be terrible teachers. In fact, time has shown that the highly skilled craftsman types are usually not the best instructor types. This fact has been shown in research many times.
