There is an undocumented feature in the linker which makes the linker treat section names that have a $ in them different from other section names. The rule seems to be that when placing sections in the PE that sections are placed in the order encounterred except that sections with a dollar sign are placed into a section of the same name, ignoring the text after the $. For example foo$1 and foo$2 are both placed in section foo. Then within the section foo, the various combined sections are sorted alphabetically. For example foo$cat would appear before foo$dog. Is this the complete rule? Not documenting this kind of information unfairly restricts non microsoft developers. There is 1 Reply.
