Phar Lap is not only necessary, it is an integral part of 3D Studio.
There is no need to modify Phar Lap to any great extent, other than
some possible minor tweaks done with a utility that is explained in
the installation and performance guide.
Lots of RAM, Qemm386, lots of disk space, hi-res VGA card, fastest
reliable CPU available on as many machines as possible, fastest bus
setup available, largest monitor available, you get the picture. More
is better in the world of 3D Studio. And a recording setup is
another story (i.e. tape format, frame buffer card resolution,
controller/software, etc…).
