Some VGA cards automaticaly query the monitor on boot up. If it can't find the monitor, it assumes the least common denominator (terrible, like you've been seeing). When you use PCReset, you probably switch back to the BB-side to watch, and during _that_ boot sequence the card is connected to the monitor (so this time it knows what it's working with), and everything mysteriously looks fine. When you turn on the machine, you may need to start with the monitor set to the BB side until the boot is finished, then proceed as you had originally intended. (Works for me, anyway.) I have an accelerated Paradise SVGA, and it was weeks before I found that "friendly" feature was built into their card. Irritating at first, it's actually nice to know the newer monitors and cards can identify each other and configure accordingly.
