Judy,
For a simple geometry like a straight cylinder … then there isn't
any advantage really to using the lofter. However, if there is a
chance that those cylinders need to bend, have beveled ends or maybe
lateer you'll want to play with the x-section shape, then these
changes are much easier to accomplish in the lofter.
