Both polyface meshes and 3D faces are *surface modelling* elements. AME produces solid modelling elements, which are an entirely different kettle of code. To bring AME objects into 3DStudio, you have to convert them to surface modelling objects by using the SOLMESH command. What you bring into 3DS is no longer a solid model but a surface model.
