Todd, I think you will be very happy with Fulton's "3D Studio Applied" book.
It is based on 3DSr3 and seems full of good information. I haven't finished it
but have been pleased with what I've read so far. I think I called Christa
Zull (216-891-3115) and ordered it for about $40. Nice CD included with meshes,
maps, demos & flics.
The Bousquet/Melenhorst series "3D Studio Tips & Tricks" are also very good,
but a lot more expensive. (I think it was $150 for all three) These were
written before r3 but are nowhere near out of date – you can use them without
worry with release 3. Pyros and others carry the set.
I also bought "Mastering 3D Studio, Volume 1: Advanced Modeling & Rendering"
for $70 bucks or so. It must be worth at least $10. It is not advanced, but
elementary. I don't recommend it at all except perhaps as an introduction for
a beginner. Most of it is a poor rehash of pieces of the manual. There is a
good chapter on lighting. If you want I will tear out the chapter on lighting
and send you the rest. <g>
And although some might be tired of hearing it, the best book, in my humble
opinion, is the manual that came with 3DS. I like to browse thru it while
waiting for renderings. He who absorbs _ALL_ of it and can quote from selected
passages on demand will be awarded the coveted Maniac Mutant Modeler and
Rendering Rogue badge.
