Although it seems that my opinion is shared by fewer people than I had
imagined, I would like to expound upon my previously expressed opinion
concerning 3DS's user interface. Although I am in no way implying that the
interface is "bad", I do feel that there is much room for improvement. I still
fail to see how the current interface is more efficient than a tablet or
graphic based system. For example: To perform a simple set of commands such as
moving an object, selecting a material, and applying it to a color group
requires the following steps. MODIFY/OBJECT/MOVE, SURFACE,MATERIAL,CHOOSE,
APPLY,OBJECT,BY COLOR. In a tablet based system these same 9 steps could have
been acomplished by 2 or 3 clicks on the tablet menu. I would challenge even
the fasted "mouse" to beat even an average tablet user in this task.
I have had the same experiences with AutoCAD. I can create a custom tablet
box that, with one click, selects DRAW/LINE/OSNAP/ENDPOINT/OSNAP/TANGENT. My
mouse would have to approach warp 2 to catch up. I have become quite familiar
with the 3DS comands and I am fairly fast in moving around the command trees,
however I would guarantee at least a doubling of my efficiency with a tablet or
graphic menu system.
I am not interested in convincing others that they would be better off with
a different user interface, but I know I would; and I would like to have the
option. All I ask is for a setup similar to AutoCAD where both mouse and
tablet users can get the most out of the program.
