Here's a way to do it with 1 sqrt():
Construct the vectors A and B as any two edges of the triangle.
A = < x2-x1, y2-y1, z2-z1 > B = < x3-x2, y3-y2, z3-z2 >
then the area is: 1/2 * |AxB|
