Our upcomming book 3D Studio Special Effects describes how to produce these
colored shadows. It's a very excellent technique developed by Tim Forcade at
Forcade and Associates.
Also, David Stinnett's awesome (the only word that fits) whale animation is in
the book along with 18 other special effects. In all, three of the special
effect projects in the book are on the 3DS SIGGRAPH '94 demo reel.
