Now it sounds like Martin might have the right idea:
<< I just noticed you have "e:\temp" and "e:\swap" referred to in the 3ds.set
and cfig386 settings, respectively. That's inconsistent and may be a cause of
your problem. Make them consistent and make sure the directory actually exists
