Speaking as a developer who is constantly in contact with dozens of makers of
3D-related programs, I can state that Autodesk's support of third-party
development is absolutely fantastic.
You must realize that most other 3D companies do not have warm bodies devoted
to helping third parties. I've had some companies refer to third party
tool-makers (like Syndesis) as "parasites." (Really, it had nothing to do with
anything I did to them. 🙂
The most common scenario I see (when asking for file format documentation, for
example) is that I'll talk to a product manager or tech support person for a
while, who eventually decides that it'll be OK for me to talk to a programmer
for a while, except I can't do it on a regular basis.
The fact that I can pick up the phone and have an IPAS question answered by a
competent engineer is nothing short of amazing.
