When a large enough meteorite hits the Earth a large volume of dust and ash are
thrown into the upper atmosphere, both from the initial hit and from the
volcanoes that erupt due to the disturbance. This debris will take years to
settle out and can be very uniformly distributed according to some of the
papers I've read.

8 miles? Miles? That's pretty deep.<g> I don't know anything about that
factor. Maybe the solar system ran through an interstellar dust cloud?
I've read that the Earth is constantly accumulating dust from space. This has
been shown in the layers for the ice cores drilled at Antarctica. One of the
authors of the report I read says that over the course of a few billion years
the total dust could be in the hundred mile range, assuming the rate of
accumulation has been consistent.
