<<Matrox's MAX, as I understand it, allows you to add random-access video to your on-line tape projects. Matrox reps have told me that it was never intended to compete as a full NLE for long form shows (anything over 17 minutes). That's still the realm of Avid, Lightworks, EdiFlex, EMC, and D/Vision.>> The MAX (Matrox Animation Xpress) is designed to be a animation work station. It uses motion J-Peg compression and has a IPAS ffile for direct access to the VTR controls of 3DS. The system is high end, CCIR-601 with composite, Y/C and component in and out. We are currently compressing to between 3.5 and 4.5 MB/second. We will be upgrading that to around 8 MB/second. It is true you can record live video on the system, and even build a edit list for playback. But the recording was origionally intended for use in rotoscoping. The edit list allows you to take more then one animation and build a list, adjusting speed, repeats of each file. We also have Matrox Studio. Studio is a full featured editing system. There is a non-linear option for Studio. Currently the non-linear is cuts only (no layering or transitions). But we will be sending out a press release soon about comming upgrades for Studio, including transitions and much more in non-linear. I beleive the press releases will be posted in our forum (GO MATROX) once they are released. I hope this helps. Alan M. Vernick Southeast Regional Manager Matrox Video Products Group
