In respect of North American distribution, there has been considerable
speculation in the Canadian user community about the future of Commodore
Canada. Currently, they are still open for business with a skeleton staff;
reports are that their sales were terrific for the last couple of months, but
they are now out of inventory.
I talked to Doug McGregor, president of Commodore Canada, a couple of weeks
back. At that time, he assured me that Commodore Canada was continuing
operations for the time being. Warehouse area was being sharply reduced (the
"For Lease" sign in front of the building gave a few local enthusiasts some bad
moments).
Commodore Canada has a stronger dealer network than that found in the US. It
has traditionally handled a different product mix from that south of the
border. Example: the Commodore MS-DOS product line was quite successful here.
Commodore Canada could well be perceived as a significant asset within the
bundle.
So, when Pleasance talks of US distribution plans, it would be of interest to
know whether he visualizes Commodore Canada remaining as an independent
facility, or being absorbed into the continental scheme.
