Tom,
I suppose your dealer thought of this, but I'll mention it just in
case. I used to be an Amiga service tech, and I've seen a fair number of
4000's that were prone to flakiness due to connection problems. You should
try reseating all of the cards & socketed chips in the machine. Especially
the CPU card and expansion slot daughterboard. You don't need to pull them
completely out, just make sure they're seated completely. It might be
worth a shot….
