This is no reason why you shouldn't be able to time your Toaster and
MX-50 such that you have NO horzontal picture shift. In fact, I've
set up several users on hybrid systems that are running both Y/C and
composite.
From the Y/C tape decks, the Y/C video runs directly to the MX-50 and
on out to the Y/C edit deck – Y/C all the way. Also from the Y/C
decks, we ran composite video to the Toaster, with Toaster Program
going to input 3 or 4 of the MX-50. The MX-50 does an acceptable job
of decoding composite video back into Y/C.
With the built-in frame syncs on the MX-50, timing is greatly
relieved. The trick, though, is to have a controllable reference
signal feeding Toaster's input 1. This can be a camera with H and SC
adjustments or any kind of slave black burst generator, such as a
Toast Timer. With everything dialed in, you should be able to do
match frame edits between the two.
