There are several levels of answers. If you are looking for the
detailed analysis of particular algorithms, I highly recommend Donald
Knuth's Series 'The art of computer programming'. You would want the
Searching and Sorting book which is pretty much a bible for DETAILED
algorithms. For things like intersecting rectangles, you probably
want to look at some of the graphics books such as the Foley VanDam
[sic?] one. I can ask my wife about which ones are very good. There
are a lot of absolutely excellent 3D graphics books out which give
very detailed algorithms and rationalle behind them.
