There are several levels of answers. If you are looking for the detailed analysis of particular algorithms, I highly recommend Donald Knuth's Series 'The art of computer programming'. You would want the Searching and Sorting book which is pretty much a bible for DETAILED algorithms. For things like intersecting rectangles, you probably want to look at some of the graphics books such as the Foley VanDam [sic?] one. I can ask my wife about which ones are very good. There are a lot of absolutely excellent 3D graphics books out which give very detailed algorithms and rationalle behind them.
