Only use fades to black or white at the end of a major sequence. It looks silly if used in the middle of a performance. I don't use special effects in the camera anyway. Just work with camera angles and swish pans for effects. Fades to white are nice when the next scene has a bunch of white that coming out of white works well with. I like white fades for weddings for example.
