It seems that many CompuServe communication nodes want to talk with 7 bit
data, even parity; but you'll need 8 bits when you start downloading.
There are two-and-a-half ways to approach this (and the method you choose
will likely depend on the terminal package you are using):
1. As Lee Bosch, set 7-E-1 and check out downloading. Many comms packages
know enough to switch to 8-bit operation for download protocols;
2. (preferred) set 8-N-1 and then find an option in your communications
program called "strip high bit" or something similar.
2a. (not recommended; horrible, but in an emergency it will work) set 8-N-1
and connect; give the CIS, account number, and password in "blind" mode (stuff
on the screen won't be readable) .. after which, the system will switch over to
fully readable text.
