I bought a book called Applications Programming in ANSI C (Second Edition) by Richard Johnsonbaugh and Martin Kalin (Depaul University, Chicago) published by Macmillan Publishing Company, New York ISBN 0-02-361131-6 and I believe this to be just the right thing to start out with C. The text on the back says: "As users of the highly successful first edition of this book can attest, it is *the* book for anyone wanting to master the C programming language. Suitable for self-study or as a text, the book contains: > extensive worked-out examples > over 600 self-test exercises (half have solutions in the back of the book) > more than 170 programming exercises > entire sections devoted to applications > list of common programming errors In addition, the book covers Turbo C, UNIX C, and VAX-11 C and has seven appendixes for reference (one devoted to UNIX)" which is about all one could say about the book.
