It's the objective part that is difficult. Everyone has their own
personal bias (sometimes more than one) which influences what they consider to
be objective. As a programmer, I detest working with Intel processors, MS-DOS
or Windows. It takes me 3-4 times longer to get something working on that
platform, so in that instance, any of the 680×0 processors are faster than the
fastest Pentium. On the other hand, I also do animations. I am in the middle of
a 60000 fram set of animations right now which would take me about 2.5 years on
my Amiga 4000, but will be done in less than 3 months on my Pentium. The 060
looks to be a nice intermediate step to a PowerPC or RISC Amiga, but it isn't
the whole journey.
As a programmer, an 060 looks to cut my compile/test cycle in half or
better, so it will be a worthwhile investment (as soon as I can scrape up
enough for one <grin>), which is the ultimate bottom line. As an animator, the
Pentium was my best investment at the time. I look forward to the day when an
Amiga can beat my Pentium, and I don't really care much what the cost will be.
I'll scrape it together somehow.
