You can try two things:
1) Fuji tapes. I haven't used them but I understand they're a bit hardier.
2) Repack the Sony tapes you're using. They're pro quality but you can improve
them. Repacking should eliminate 80 to 90 percent of your dropouts. Simply run
the tape fast forward all the way to the and rewind it back to the head before
you start shooting. We used to do this in the old days with 3/4 tapes.
I think you will find repacking will make a major difference. I was so
unsatisfied with dropouts I refused to shoot Hi8 until I found out about this
trick. It will make a difference.
