#LW4.0 Upgrade
>>I think he may have been referring to feature richness as opposed to sales.
I would still have to disagree with him. 3DS had IK before LW, It has
perspective matching tools, it has extreemly acurate motion controls, it has
what seems like millions of plug-ins (including motion capture). And it has an
animation scripting language.
LW has some things 3DS doesn't. Raytracing, NT compatability, splines,
good subdiving/ organic modeling tools. But everything LW has it will have when
its relaesd for NT (expected in Jan.)
I am not trying to start a program war, but inform you that competition on the
PC side tough and 3DS with the one to beat on the PC side.
Take for example HSC turned Kais power tools into a plug-in for 3DS, but they
are taking a wait and see attitude for LW.
Positron publishing Mesh Paint started as a plug-in for 3DS, they are turning
the product into a separate program for NT rater than risk making separted
plug-ins for LW and 3DS. The only maker of plug-ins for 3DS jumping on theLW
bandwagon right now is Xaos Tools, and thats mostly due to a partnership for
selling Lightwave.
So why due I like LW, because A-desk sat on its butt for years raking in $$
without porting 3DS from dos until competition came along, I wanted to join the
competition.
As far as Alias and it features go, one of the top 3 SGI programs and now owned
by SGI. Motion capture, Rayadoisity rendering, realistic hair, realtime
textures, NURBS modeler, I can't see any way LW being ahead of Alias (but I
wound not pay the price for Alias and the hardware either)
Anyway Wayne that is why I can not agree that NewTek is leading the way, except
in the area of multi-platform ports in NT.
I hope they do well, I am spending a lot of hours learning it.
