NT talking to SGI
hi all!
the good news:
My systems administrator and I (but mainly him) managed to get NT 3.51 talking
to our file server (an SGI ChallengeS) and set up drive letter for its drives.
This is very cool. We used a freeware software called "Samba" which was
recommended by John Foust, I think. This also means that we could probably set
up machines all over the company as drive letters, but there are so many we'd
probably exceed the number of drive letters. We can use FTP for this, so no big
deal.
the bad news:
the response time in seeing directories show up is veeeerrrry slow. In fact,
painfully slow. If you click on the directory you want to see, it might take up
to 10 seconds to be shown the files in the directory. Using regular Windows
3.11 or DOS the same action is pretty much instantaneous.
Any ideas what could be causing this delay or what steps to take? My feeling is
to contact the "Samba" developers, but there may be some tuning possible or
settings we've missed.
