I don't know why you are being told that you NEED an active terminator but
they will improve the signal quality on an Amiga scsi bus. If you also
need a drive, I would suggest just getting one of the Maxtors with active
termination.
A couple of folks at Maxtor were playing with a fellow employee's Amiga
that had always had scsi bus problems. One of the tech's connected a scsi
bus analyzer to the machine. He noted that the bus signals looked
distorted. He then connected a Maxtor MXT-540 (with active termination)
and noted that the signals were quite clean. As they played around they
discovered that it did not matter what they did to the configuration, as
long as the 540 was connect somewhere on the bus, the machine worked fine.
They even removed termination from both ends of the bus and placed the 540
close to the cpu and the bus still worked.
Of course that makes for an expensive "terminator" but it has some "side"
benefits.
