If I'd thought about it a while I'd probably have figured out that the DOS Text Printer was needed. The garbage sprite appeared about 2/3's of the way down and 1/3 of the way across the screen. It would move a few pixels in response to mouse pointer movement up and down, and was only visible when the mouse pointer was in the upper half of the screen. Made me suspicious that it was a screwed-up Vsprite.
