Ron – Welcome to the wonderful world of Amiga. For the kind of work you are into – The Amiga is really the only way for you to go. But – be for-warned, although you can get into an Amiga system for alot less money then you can get into a Mac for, you will soon want to build your Amiga up to the level of that one you have at the office. And then (for Video work) it will run rings around that Mac. (Eventually, for video work, you will want 8megs ram, a large hard drive, and a 6030 processor). In answer to your 128 questions. Let me ask you one – Will Apple II software run on the Mac? No! The software from your 128 is not useable on the Amiga. Your Thomson RGB is not the right monitor for the Amiga either. The Amiga takes and RGB Analog monitor on the low end (minimal) and can also be used with many of the MultiSync monitors on the market. As for your requirement for minimal system configuration. Ron, you must keep in mind the type of work you want to do with the Amiga. You don't want to buy into an Amiga 500 (The 500 would be the low end system – $600) now and 6 months down the road wish you had gotten an A2000 or even an A3000. I would think the minimal system for you NOW is the A2000HD. This would be a 1meg machine with a 40meg harddrive. (BTW until September 30th C= is giving a free monitor with this system). You will soon want to expand this machine with memory and the controller card has room for 2 megs on it, but you may want to consider getting an addition memory card that has room for the entire allowable memory expansion which is 8meg on the Amiga. The Amiga 2000HD runs at a street price of around $2300. Extra memory is hard to price, but currently 2megs of ram are going for about $300 – $400 (with per chip prices being lower once you have the memory card). Genlocks for the Amiga are in three price ranges $300-$400, $700-$900, and over $1000. I am sure others here will fill you in on thier opinions, and you will [ MORE ]
