Mark; The definition of profanity is quite precise. The application of the definition to a particular phrase is subject to opinions and difficult to accomplish at best. I do have a bit of trouble relating to your use of goddamn if you do not believe in God. The original expression came from the "prayer" of a theist to rid the world of some particular problem. While many people theist and atheist alike will use such expressions without thought as to their real meaning, an atheist would not be able to provide any justification for such use except for the perceived effect on theists.
