Greg, Certainly Dave will have some answer for you, but here is a list of GUESSES as to their reasons: 1. Because that's the way it is. 2. Marketing. They may wish to separate the 500 from the rest of the line and this is one way to keep it that way. 3. Because the modification of the motherboard may be enough to require the machine be re-certified. 4. Because they still have a stock of machines with the 512K only Agnus (8370) and don't want those buyers to feel "cheated" since to upgrade, they'd have to not only pay for the modification..but a new Agnus also. But others would only have to pay for the modification since the particular machine they bought may have had a 1 Meg Agnus (8372) in it from the factory. 5. Because they've had a fair number of "defective" machines returned where the defect was caused by the modification. If MicroSearch wants…why can't they continue to do the modifications and provide warranty coverage themselves…rather than via Commodore. Just so they notify customers of that prior to making the modification…I see no problem with it…that is, if your service agreement with Commodore doesn't prohibit making unauthorized modifications.
