We do have graphics drivers, SCSI controllers, sound cards, CD-ROM, and LANtastic network all on the same machines. Using QEMM 7 with DOS 6's multi config, we can have 634K of free DOS conventional RAM even with all those drivers and SmartDrive loaded. We've never once had a problem with cross-linked files (we use LANcache instead of SmartDrive, since it's a bit smaller and is able to speed up LANtastic access as well as physical hard disk access, but the methodology is the same: never power down, reboot, or reset without first flushing the cache! DOS 6.2 and the SmartDrive patch "fix" this by defaulting to Write-Back caching off, and we're just not willing to take that kind of performance hit in the name of safety when we already have that taken care of).
