Well, this is one of those stories. A driver of such magnitude could cost well over a million in development alone. The market isn't that big to justify such expenditure and, at the same time, it isn't big enough exactly because we don't have those drivers. To get matters worse, it's not easy to make a decision as to what OS to write the drivers for. DOS is going down as fast as the space shuttle on reentry. DOS development has, if not halted, gone well bellow the threshold of bringing in new technologies. Windows is a joke. NT and OS/2 are two big white whales swiming awfully close to shallow waters ready to get grounded for good if a new course is not taken. Chicago is far from being a reality. Take a look at Michael Miller's article in the last PC Mag (Sep 23). He talks about similar situations (albeit in his peculiar blind vision). Microsoft and IBM try to lure people to their environments but who will ultimately make the decision are the applications people use. Find an OS that I can just plug in my machine, have all my weird hardware to work and the software I use to run better and I will switch in a minute. There isn't such a thing. DOS, and its silly [MS Windows] GUI, is still the only OS able to do that.
