It sounds like it should be pretty straight forward. How is he having
trouble lining things up? Is it that the mapped object won't fit back in
seamlessly, or is there a camera move during the shot? If the background plate
was locked off, then lining things up should be easy, but you mentioned he was
using the camera to line things up. The cameras perspective might be screwing
things up, due to FOV and/or slight variations in angle. With a locked shot,
all adjustments should be made in an ortho viewport, and be rendered from the
same.
On the other hand, if there is camera movement, then that naturally
complicates things quite a bit. My only suggestion there would be to find out
the lens used and the distance of the subject from the camera (the first from
the camera report, the second…?) to do a basic lineup and then key every
frame for the best accuracy. This of course can be quite time consuming, but
probably neccesary for that kind of situation.
Given what you mentioned, thats all I can think of without further
details. I hope its of some help, or at least insight.
